The Shield Generator is a 3x2 room unlocked at level 2. The Shield Generator is one of the earliest defense rooms unlocked and one of the most important defense rooms available. The Shield Generator, when placed in the player's ship, will project a shield that is essentially a rechargeable health bar. The shield will absorb laser and ballistic hits, but will not absorb Missiles. The Shield Generator will also always start off with a full shield in combat, even if it has no power.
The Shield Generator's damage absorbing properties makes it a huge target for enemies. Since most starships also have a Shield Generator, many AI commands are set to target the Shield Generator. An important thing to note is that the Shield Generator cannot stop enemy boarders from reaching the player's ship. Thus, Armor and man the Shield Generator well.
The Shield Generator also has some mechanics not explained in game. For example, when the Shield Generator is destroyed, all shield hitpoints will drop to 0 immediately. Along with this, if a bullet that deals two shield damage hits a shield with one hitpoint, the shield will absorb all the damage. This is because leftover shield damage cannot be carried over to damage rooms.
When To Use
The Shield Generator is a needed defense room for almost every type of starship, especially past level 10. There are not many reasons not to use the Shield Generator, and once the player utilizes a Shield Battery in conjunction with the generator, the shield becomes incredibly effective at absorbing damage.
Here is a good AI command to help save power. The AI will depower the Shield Generator once all weapons that can damage the shield are destroyed/missing. Shield Generators are also categorized as "Shield Rooms" in AI coding.
