The Shield is the first defensive room unlocked in the game. The Shield just like the name implies, shields you from all projectiles except for missiles. The Shield starts fully charged, powered or not and then has a recharge rate for 1 bar of shield every time you lose shield capacity. Because of the shield's block and three power, it makes it a massive target for many players.
When attacking, the shield will always start off at maximum capacity even with no power. After that, the shield will struggle to recharge fast enough with the barrage of bullets if they have 2 or more weapons that damage the shields. If your above level 10, you should equip a shield because a blast from the EMP Cannon or Ion Cannon will cripple any system in your ship.
The shield is a very common room and usually the room most people target in their AI settings. This makes your shield a high priority so make sure you have sufficient armor and crew supporting it. Besides that, if your under level 10 you can remove your shield when offline to hopefully mess up their AI commands that rely on shields. The shield will NOT protect you if it's upgrading.
The Shield is a must have for levels 10+ and it's very important for lower levels that don't have sufficient Armor. Nonetheless, it is ultimately your decision to use the shield or not. But, let's discuss some AI tactics you can do with your shield to save power.
First, you should know that the shield will be almost next to useless when it gets depleted and the enemy has 2 or more weapons (Or just Missile Launchers). Here is the AI to conserve power when your shield finally depletes. Also, if you see that the enemy only runs Missile Launchers you should depower the shield to save yourself power.

You can also do a little bit more complicated setting for extra Hangar Defense.
