The Photon Disruptor is a 3x2 weapon room that can be built on the Medium Weapons Platform. The Photon Disruptor does 2.5 points of damage to shields, 0.1 points of damage to systems, and has an EMP Stun that lasts for 0.5 seconds. As you can see, the Photon Disruptor is meant to take down Shields.
The Photon Disruptor can quickly bring down the enemy shield. Its EMP Effect also gives it a use outside of this by temporarily stunning the target room. However, its 3 power consumption and 0.1 system damage make it hard to justify using outside of a strategy that requires enemy shield reduction at an accelerated rate.
When To Use
The Photon Disruptor is best used on Hangar ships to take down the Shield quickly, allowing your craft to deal damage to rooms like the Anti Craft Laser. Gunship hulls can also benefit from the high Shield damage the Disruptor does, allowing it to damage the enemy weapon rooms before they can do the same.
Unless you plan on utilizing its half a second EMP, here is a good AI code to save you power once the Shield Generator is destroyed. Do not use the Active Shield AI as the shield will probably regenerate the moment the AI powers down the Disruptor. Currently, the Disruptor is also counted as a "Laser Room" in AI coding.
