Summary

The Mining Laser is the first weapon you obtain in Pixel Starships and the only one able to produce a resource. It is great for mass farming as it doesn't have ammo nor a long charge time. Its low energy count makes it very efficient, but also a big target making Armor a must.

Strategy

Attacking

The Mining Laser does exactly one damage to an unarmored room. This makes it have a hard time chewing through armored or 3+ power rooms. If you find your opponent has a one power room, make sure the lasers fire no higher apart than 0.7 seconds to do guaranteed damage. The Laser also does massive crew damage to yours and the enemies, this still takes awhile so make sure you have some other win condition.

Defending

Make sure your Mining Laser has a ton of armor and crew around it, it only has two power which makes it a BIG target. The room to target when editing the Laser's AI can also be a dilemma. The Shield is usually your safest bet, it has only three power but it usually has alot of armor and crew around it. Reactors have too much collective power to ever do real hull damage, so don't set it to target reactors.

When To Use

Boarding Strat

Generally, it is not that effective to pair this with the boarding strat on defense as the crew will often get killed by the lasers friendly fire or won't make an effort to support your laser's focus fire. However, if you can control the combat it is great as it saves many missiles or whatever you would usually use.

Hangar Spam Strat

Generally, Missile Launcher would be much better in this situation as they bypass shields and can either EMP or Murder all Teleporters that might over run your ship. The Lasers would have to shoot down a tedious shield and then have to overpower the many crew in the TLP. They also have a hard time dealing with AA or 3 Powered Rooms.

Weapon Spam/Missiles

If your spamming weapons, go ahead and pair this on your hull, it's great. But, weapon spam is not an effective strategy as a Hanger spam or TLP rush is much more superior to this.
