The Mineral Mining Laser is a 3x2 weapon room unlocked at level one. It's both the first laser and weapon room you unlock in-game. The Mineral Mining Laser does one point of damage to crew and systems and 0.5 points of damage to shields. The Mineral Mining Laser can also generate Mineral when it's not in combat.
The Mineral Mining Laser is a good weapon when focus firing with other weapon rooms, however, it's very weak by itself. The Shield Generator will usually be a big target for you if you use the Mineral Mining Laser. This is due to how much damage it can tank from the laser. Also, make sure to armor the room well as the two maximum power can make the room a big target.
When To Use
The Mineral Mining Laser works well in almost every starship loadout due to its lower power consumption and decent damage output. It's absolutely needed in gunship hulls as the focus fire combined with Plasma Phasers and Laser Blasters can do massive crew and hull damage.
There really isn't any magic AI for the Mineral Mining Laser, just make sure it targets the same room all your other weapon rooms target. Also, the Mineral Mining Laser is categorized as a "Laser Room" in AI coding.
